This week I drove up to Albany, Georgia to help my son, Brad, move into his first new home. Beautiful country up there. Fresh cool air. Pecans picked right off the tree. From a distance saw freshly harvested cotton. Have never seen a cotton plant before...dark wooden sticks with cotton balls hanging from them. Saw a deer processing plant for the first time. : ( There's a lot of hunting up in there.

this is the apt building i lived in, back in the 1970's-80's, when i was an NYU student........100 sullivan st. in soho, NYC..........i lived in a studio apt.........with paper thin walls, no shortage of cockroaches and oversexed neighbors.......way back in the 70's, most of the residents were of italian descent............annually, there was the st. anthony's food festival on my street...........i had the best seat in town.......the fire escape........where i would sit with a glass of wine, watch the people stroll by and take in the wonderful aroma of cooked italian sausages with peppers and onions.........albert, a guitarist and composer, and I wrote many songs about the residents.........we wrote one together about my 'large' italian landlady.....during the day she never left her post..the window on the ground floor......................"fat mama sits by the window.................."..

unfortunately, i was not the photographer.........so.....most of the necropsy photos came out blurry........we were supposed to be using the photos for our presentation..........oh well........our dog had 23 mature male heartworms (curly tail distinguishes them from the female)........28 adult females............and 1 immature female...................this poor girl.............it is amazing she was walking around........

i am currently taking two classes....one i s clinical parasitology and the other clinical microbiology.........both very interesting classes..................it is a great feeling to be sitting back in the classroom......having regular hours.....no longer running around like a chicken without a head................parasites are an interest of mine..........pictured above is the giant kidney worm of the dog..........dioctophyma renale .............an animal can have no clinical signs and function with only one healthy kidney...........so this worm can completely take over the kidney, destroy the parenchyma...........and no one would have a clue...............until it is too late...........found on necropsy, not infrequently...........

jake has reenlisted.......he has been told he will not have to return to iraq.(he will still be in iraq until march).............and can choose his 'job' and location in the future...............i am skeptical.................you go where they 'need' you.........they have let him down once before...........by giving him the most dangerous job of patrolling ramadi..........it can't get any worse than busting into people's homes looking for insurgents...........when he pulled a muscle....they had him in a communications position..........much safer, indoors..............but he is now back on the streets..............
